The police arrested fourteen “agitators” at Duquesne when they rose to speak from an open automobile. In Rankin, a landlord rented his hall to organizers for a meeting, only to have the health department shut him down. A convention speaker at the Pittsburgh Labor Temple condemned such infringements, but to no effect.
The police jailed Flying Squad organizer B.L. Beaghen on eight separate occasions, but that didn’t stop him from stirring up workers at plants throughout the region. Mary Harris “Mother” Jones, a former schoolteacher and cofounder of the IWW, drew more than three thousand at the Falcon Hall on South Eighteenth Street in Pittsburgh. Although eighty-three years old, diminutive in size and clad in a nondescript old-fashioned black dress, this Irish-born rabble-rouser lit up the crowd with her fiery sermon: “I lost my husband and four young children to yellow fever decades ago, but that did not stop me. I tell you, boys, pray for the dead, and fight like hell for the living.” She eviscerated the company spotters and spies who attended the speech. “The pigs jailed me like a dog for expressing my God-given thoughts, and the factory bosses called me the most dangerous woman in America. Well, I say bull crap. I’m proud of my work in West Virginia as a United Mine Worker organizer, and I am proud to be with you today.” The slightest hint of an Irish brogue added just the right emotional appeal to her storytelling. “I have been told I do not have the proper permit to speak here. I assure you I do. I carry the permit of Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson for free speech.” The crowd roared its approval of Mother Jones and jeered each mention of company officials.
